Welcome to the James Hype Discord Server!

We’re glad to have you in the server! This page is designed to be a resource for users who are new to Discord, and explains how everything works – and what each of the channels are for!

A basic explanation of how Discord works…

A Discord Server (sometimes known as a ‘guild’) is a container for multiple chat/voice rooms (known as ‘channels’) which can be used for different purposes.

These channels can be optionally organised into ‘Channel Categories’ (which are the little drop-down tags you see above a bunch of channels) which can be used to sort channels into topics, or otherwise.

You won’t be able to speak in every single channel, as some are restricted allowing only specific people (or groups of people – more on that later) to type within them. An example of this is #announcements, which only Administrators, James, and specific Moderators can type in.

I’m new to the server, what should I do first?

When you first join, you’ll answer a short number of questions to help customise your experience, and to ensure we’re only showing you channels you care about!

Before starting to engage with the server, you should read our simple Discord Rules, which apply everywhere you visit on the server, and on HYPEFAM.global. You can either read these in the #rules channel, or by visiting our rules page!

After you’ve completed the onboarding survey, you’ll receive a ping from @hypebot (our custom in-house Discord Bot) with some buttons which can take you to channels which can help you get started on the server.

The first thing you should always do is introduce yourself! To do this, head over to the #introduce-yourself channel and tell us a little bit about yourself. (Remember: Don’t give away any personal information)

Who can I speak to if I need help?

We’re glad you asked – our handy team of Moderators will be happy to help you with any questions you may have.

Whilst we’re speaking about Moderators, it may be helpful to introduce who they are and what they do. Our mod team consists of hand-picked active members of the HYPEFAM who bring positive, consistent activity to the community.

The team of moderators have additional permissions in the server to help keep the place clean and tidy – and can also remove any messages/people who aren’t living up to the expectations of the REAL HYPEFAM.

99% of people will not notice the difference between a regular user and a moderator, they’re just HYPEFAM – like you yourself – however people who choose to break the rules we outline for the community will quickly find the mods in their rear-view mirror!

A moderator can be identified by their name tag, which will usually show up in a bright green colour.

From time to time, we’ll also have a new Trial Moderator on the block, who are often our latest recruits to the Moderation Team. These guys are learning the ropes, and may still rely on the green gang for a little help from time to time. Respect trial moderators in just the same way you would any other moderator, they’re just getting to grips with the role!

You’ll also notice Max, who is a Server Admin with a vibrant pink name tag! Admins look after the server day-to-day, including management of moderation efforts, external integrations with other services, and more. We’re always working to make the experience within the server better, so if you have any thoughts/comments, please do let one of the team know, or head down to the
#suggestions-box
to spread the word!

We also have a pretty awesome team of robots who keep track of Server Engagement and provide general commands for use within the server. It is also Max who is responsible for these, so if something goes wrong – let him know!

Official STEREOHYPE Crew

Alongside James Hype, some of the STEREOHYPE DJs and crew also swing by the server from time to time. You’ll know an official message because all of the STEREOHYPE Crew and DJs have a special role, their name will show up in a different colour, and they’ll have a verified checkmark alongside their name. If you see a message from somebody claiming to be official STEREOHYPE staff, or James – but is missing these profile features, please assume the message to be fake, and inform a member of the Moderation Team.

Please don’t pester James or the rest of the team with pings/mentions. They all have lives too, away from the cameras, social media, and yes – even the decks. The server rules do mention this, so you’ll likely find a message from a moderator if you are found to be inconsiderately mentioning one of the crew.

A brief tour of the James Hype Discord server!

Before we get started – know that this list isn’t comprehensive, and doesn’t include every single channel on the server. This is deliberate, to encourage you to explore the server, and get to know the users who frequent each channel!

There are multiple channel categories throughout the server, which you’ll see listed on the left hand side of Discord.
Here’s a basic overview of each one:

  • HYPEFAM Social

The main “general purpose” channels for the community are within this section.
#hypefam-chat is the main channel you’ll find most activity within day-to-day.

We’ve also got a #memes channel for any memes you find in your day-to-day.

HYPEFAM Social is also host to a number of Voice Channels which see intermittent use for general chat between members of the server, and of course – we have the Mainstage (JH QnA) channel, which is where any events involving James will be hosted on the server.

  • HYPEFAM VIP

The VIP section is relatively new to the server, and contains all channels relating to the brand new HYPEFAM VIP initiative.

The channels within this section will be exclusive to members of specific tiers within the program, each offering their own perks.

We’ll have more to say about this section when everything has been announced. We’re still waiting on the team behind HYPEFAM VIP to finalise some features before we’re able to offer this functionality to you.

  • ### Live Events ###

We’re all about engaging with fellow HYPEFAM attending real life James Hype & STEREOHYPE events, asuch when there’s a large event run by STEREOHYPE or James Hype, more often than not, a chat channel dedicated to each event will be created in this section.

These chat channels will be used for conversation specific to the event, planning meetups (both outside and inside the event) and sometimes even planning pre-meets, for drinks, or even for a DJ session!
(Yes, this has happened many times before…)

Moderators can manage channels within this category, so if you’d like to see a chat channel for an upcoming event, please do let a moderator know!

  • Community

Channels which encourage community development and/or sharing of knowledge/resources are featured within the Community section.

Examples of channels in this category are #what-is-that-track where you can come to the community for help if you cannot identify a track, or Shazam cannot pick it up! You can also use #track-suggestions to showcase the latest banger you found on Spotify!

#track-suggestions is not for self promotion.

  • Music Production

The Music Production category is a one-stop-shop to find likeminded producers from among the community. It features
    #feedback-hub

which is a special forum-type channel allowing you to get some feedback on your latest ID!

We’ve also got additional producter-oriented channels allowing you to discuss all things production without unrelated chatter getting in the way! Discuss the latest Production News (new DAW releases, and similar) in your own dedicated space!

  • HYPEFAM_GLOBAL

Hey look! It’s our time to shine! The HYPEFAM.global category is used to discuss and share news about the HYPEFAM.global project, and annoucne any additional functionality or events we’re working on. This most recently happened with the 12 Streams of Christmas, however we’re working on plenty more projects and cannot wait to share more. It’s here you’ll see the news first, with links to the website where necessary!

  • Self Promo

This category, we feel, requires little introduction.
It’s here you can showcase your latest tracks, DJ sets and tutorials all in a dedicated space. The self promotion channel is one of the most high-traffic channels, with 100s of people looking at the channel every single week! With that in mind, there’s some restrictions regarding what can be promoted in the channel, so be sure to read the Channel Topic before posting there. You can only post in the Self Promotion channels once every couple of hours, to ensure traffic is distributed fairly among those who post there.

  • Miscellaneous

In this category, you’ll find the channels that, well – don’t fit into any other channel. We use this category for things like obtaining user feedback, with a feedback forum for a number of different aspects of the community, and for other unrelated channels with dedicated topics – for instance, we have a high volume of gamers in the server, so there’s #hypefam-game-chat
to discuss all things gaming! We’ve even got our own HYPEFAM Minecraft Server, which you can join from within that channel.
